West Bengal Map

West Bengal is a state in the eastern part of India. It is a thin strip of land that stretches from the Himalayas in the north to the Bay of Bengal in the south providing the only way to move across the north eastern states from the rest of India. It has the unique distinction of sharing its boundaries with as many as three of India's neighboring countries - Bangladesh to the east, Nepal to the northwest and Bhutan to the northeast. The Indian states of Assam and Sikkim lie to its northeast, while to the southwest, it has Orissa. The western boundary is formed by the states of Bihar and Jharkhand. Spread in a geographical area of 88,752 square kilometers, it has the Darjeeling Himalayan region at its northern extreme and a coastal region at the extreme south. The middle of West Bengal consists of the Gangetic plains interspersed with the Terai region, the Rarh region, plateaus and high lands. The state of West Bengal is famous for the mangrove forests of Sundarbans, which is home to the world famous Royal Bengal Tigers. The Ganga is the main river which meanders through the state in several branches, such as the Bhagirathi River and Hooghly River. Its one branch moves into Bangladesh where it is known as the Padma. Some of the other rivers in the state are Teesta, Mahananda, Jaldhaka, Damodar, Kangsabati and Torsa. The capital is Kolkata, which was established by the British East India Company under its former name of Calcutta to serve as the capital of their growing colonial empire in India. The region of West Bengal was the foremost battleground for nationalists of all kinds to wage war against the colonial rule during independence movement. Predominantly an agrarian society, the district of Kolkata and other urban locations have seen rapid industrial and commercial development in recent times.
