Vellore is an important city of Tamilnadu lying between the metro cities of Chennai and Bangalore. Vellore is located 220 km east of Bangalore and 135 km south west of Chennai. Owing to its proximity to major industrial locations, the city of Vellore has been experiencing a consistent growth pattern since independence. Historically, the city has been regarded as one of the oldest surviving civilizations in South India. Situated on the banks of Palar river, the city lies at an elevation of 216 meters from sea level. Most of the terrain of Vellore lies on the plains, while some surrounding areas consist of low, rocky hills. Its climate remains dry and hot during most part of the year. Rainfall occurs only during the time of monsoon, which prevails in two distinct spells, one from June till August and the other between October and December. Temperature ranges between 10 degree centigrade in the winter months and 43 degree centigrade in the summer months. The area covered by the city is about 392 square kilometers. Its estimated population is approximately 900,000. The commercial activities prevalent in Vellore include processing of leather & tannery industries, chemical manufacturing, retail business and proposed development in IT segment. Vellore is particularly known for Christian Medical College & Hospital or CMC, one of the top hospitals in India.
