Varanasi, also known by the name of Benaras or Banaras, is a city located in the Indian State of Uttar Pradesh. One among the most revered holy cities in India, Varanasi is often referred to as the religious and cultural capital of the country. Its cultural and religious importance is closely associated with the river Ganga that flows through the eastern part of the city. Known by the name of Kashi in ancient India, the area comprising modern city of Varanasi has always been the center of India's cultural evolution and various religious practices. It has also been regarded as a seat of high learning since ancient times, which it retains even now by providing quality education through institutions of world repute. Chief among them is the national university known by the name of Banaras Hindu University. Apart from the BHU, the district of Varanasi is a home to three other universities also, which are Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth, Sampurnanand Sanskrit University and Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies. Varanasi has also been associated with the names of several poets, musicians, philosophers and writers, chief among them are Ravidas, Kabir, Munshi Premchand, Swami Ramanand, Jaishankar Prasad, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Tailang Swami, Acharya Ram Chandra Shukla, Ustad Bismillah Khan and Girija Devi.
