Uttar Pradesh Map |
Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in India, lies in the fertile plain of the basin formed by the river Ganga and its major tributaries. It is the fourth largest state in terms of area, which is bound by Nepal on the north, Bihar on the east, Madhya Pradesh on the south, Rajasthan on the south west, Haryana on the west, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi on the north west, and Uttrakhand on the north east. While the major portion of the state consists of the alluvial terrain of the Gangetic Plain, a significant part also features rough and varied terrain owing to the presence of the Himalayan ranges in the north and the Vindhya Hills and plateau in the south. The region comprising the present state of Uttar Pradesh has been an important part of the several empires that emerged on its east or west at various points in the timeline of its historical past. It contains sites that are regarded to be the birthplace of Hinduism, the most prevalent religion in India. Some of the well-known centers of learning, culture and ancient history as well as the sites of a very high religious value are located within the present boundaries of Uttar Pradesh. Lucknow is the political capital of the state while Kanpur is regarded as its industrial capital. The high court is based at Allahabad, which is also an important center of higher education and cultural tradition of the state. Varanasi is an ancient city and is among the most revered pilgrimage sites in India, while Agra is known for great monuments and fine specimens of Mughal architecture.
