Secunderabad Map |
Secunderabad is a city in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh and falls under the district of Hyderabad, the capital of the state. Hyderabad and Secunderabad are known as "Twin cities" across the country. A man-made lake built in the sixteenth century by Qutb Shahis and known as Hussain Sagar lake separates the two cities developed under different political dominions. As a result, they manifest different cultural affiliations. While the city of Hyderabad has been the cultural center and administrative capital of a princely state ruled by various Nizams, Secunderabad was a city developed under the British rule until the independence of India. The city of Secunderabad came into existence during the eighteenth century to serve as a cantonment for keeping British battalions. Even today, the city is serving the purpose and its cantonment area is regarded as the largest cantonment all over India. The civilian area of Secunderabad is nearer to Hyderabad than the cantonment area. Some of the most populous places in the city include Trimulgherry, Paradise Circle, Marredpally, James Street and Kharkhana. The city has an international airport known as Begumpet International Airport and lies in the south central zone of the Indian Railways.
