Salem is a city located in the north central part of Tamilnadu, the southernmost state of India. The district of Salem, a part of the Kongu Nadu region, is bounded by hills on all four sides. Towards the north, it has the Nagarmalai and toward the south, it is bound by the Jeragamalai. The Godumalai is located at its eastern side, while the Kanjanmalai forms its western boundary. Salem is a site located at the base of picturesque Yercaud hills, which has been a major attraction for tourist coming to the city. Other destinations of tourist interest include Kilyur Falls and numerous Mariamman temples. Salem is one of the most important cities in Tamilnadu and it is regarded as the fifth largest city of the state after Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and Trichy. Rich in mineral resources, the district of Salem provides a base for the establishment of a number of industries. One of the largest deposits of magnesite has been found here. The region is particularly famous for the production of traditional silver anklets worn by women. There are textile mills, automobile companies and flourishing poultry and sago industries. Moreover, it has one of the largest regional markets of agricultural produces in the form of the Leigh Bazaar. Salem has also been known in the past for the existence of a number of theatre studios engaged in the production of Tamil films.
