Punjab Map |
Punjab, the largest producer of wheat in India, is a state located in the northwestern part of the country. It has an international border to the west, which separates it from the Pakistani province of Punjab. To the north lies the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir and to the south and southeast, it is bound by Haryana. The southwestern and the northeastern borders of the state are formed by Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh respectively. The state of Punjab covers an area of 50,362 square kilometers and the population is estimated to be over 25 million. The capital is Chandigarh, which is also the capital of Haryana. The geographical area of Punjab was divided into three parts to create new states of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh in 1966. Some of the major cities of Punjab are Amritsar, Ludhiana, Mohali and Jalandhar. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people living in Punjab and also the largest contributor to the economy of the state. The term 'Punjab' is a Persian word meaning "the Land of Fiver Rivers". The five rivers which were the part of undivided Punjab region before independence include the names of Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej. The river system and excellent irrigation facilities have made it possible for the people to cultivate wheat and other crops despite low rainfall in the state. Besides agriculture, people are engaged in activities, like manufacture of electrical goods, scientific instruments, machine tools, textiles, sewing machines, sports goods, fertilizers and bicycles, and the processing of sugar and pine oil.
