Pune is an exemplification of indigenous Marathi culture that finds its origin in the later Medieval period during the reign of great Maratha kings and Peshwa rulers. The earliest known history of the region occupied by the present Pune dates back to the eighth century after Christ, when it was supposed to be ruled by the Rashtrakutas. The Pataleshwar rock-cut temple and the copper plates found here during several excavations provide enough evidence to support this claim. The subsequent era spanning a period between the ninth century and the seventeenth century saw the annexation of the region by empires, like Yadava Empire of Deogiri, Nizamshahi sultans and the Mughal empire.
The Maratha rose into power under the vibrant leadership of the great king Sahaji Bhosale to pose the first major challenge to the reigning Mughal rulers, which paved the development of Pune and the surrounding areas in subsequent years.

Rango Bapuji Dhadhphale, an administrative official of Sahaji Bhosale, initiated the first major development work in Pune and the region saw the construction of the Kasba, Ravivar, Somwar and Shaniwar Peths.
The glory of the Maratha empire reached its acme when the onus of leadership fell on the strong shoulders of Shivaji Bhosale, the son of Sahaji Bhosale. As an icon of exceptional valor and incredible heroism, he is still remembered across the country, more commonly by his titular name Chattrapati Shivaji. His reign saw an all round development of Pune including the construction of the Ganesh, Somwar, Guruwar and the Ghorpade Peths. The construction of the Lal Mahal also got completed during his period. After his son Chattrapati Shahuji, the Maratha kingdom was ruled by several Peshwa rulers till the defeat of the Marathas in the third battle of Panipat in 1761. The declining power of the Peshwas resulted the annexation of Poona by Yashwantrao Holkar followed by several wars between the Marathas and the British.
The British took control of the region after the defeat of the Peshwas in the third Anglo-Maratha War in 1817. It was made an administrative unit of the Bombay Presidency and to its east, a large military cantonment was established to garrison British troops. The modern city of Pune came into existence with the establishment of Pune Municipal Corporation in 1858 by the British rulers. During the first independence movement, the Maratha tried to unite once again under the leadership of Nanasaheb Peshwa in order to overthrow the yoke of British subjugation. The attempt failed and the city remained under the control of foreign rulers until India gets its independence in 1947.
After the independence, the city underwent a rapid development process, which saw the rise of Pune as an important industrial site of the country. The city was favored by several well-known automotive and engineering companies of the country for setting up their industrial bases. As the economy of the city started to rise, there opened immense scope for the growth of Pune properties and the various constituents of the real estate industry. In recent times, the city has become a favorite destination for numerous IT, ITES and BPO companies. There is a very large number of educational institutes, colleges and schools along with a university known as Pune University to place the city on the educational map of India.
