Orissa Map |
Orissa, the ninth largest state in India, is located on the eastern coast of the country facing the Bay of Bengal to its east. Its 480 km long coastline is mostly unindented, which is the reason why the state lacks the existence of any important ports. Most of the western and northern portions of Orissa form a part of the Chhota Nagpur plateau and are not suitable for intensive agriculture. The region along the coastline consists of alluvial soil and is the most fertile land in the state. It is where the valleys and the delta regions of the Mahanadi, Brahmani and Baitarani rivers are found, which are supportive of a large population of the state. The highest mountain in the state is known as Deomali, with an altitude of 1672 meter. Deomali is also known as the tallest peak of the Eastern Ghats. Most of Orissa's landscapes are covered by unspoiled forests, which are home to much of the state's wildlife. Simlipal National Park Tiger Reserve, Chilka Lake Bird Sanctuary and the Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary are well known wildlife sanctuaries in Orissa. The beaches of the state are home to Olive Ridley sea turtles, which are a major attractions to the people visiting here. Orissa has several religious sites and places of tourist interest. The Jagannath Temple of Puri, the Sun Temple of Konark and the Lingaraja Temple of Bhubaneswar are some of the famous temples that attract devotees from all across the country each year. Bhubaneswar is the capital and Cuttack is a major commercial city of the state.
