Nasik, also spelled as Nashik, is a highly-industrialized district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is situated in the north-western part of the state and occupies an area of 270 square kilometer. Moreover, it lies at a distance of 180 km from Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra and 220 km from Pune, the next important city in the state. The city of Nasik is the administrative headquarter of the Nasik District and Division. The urban population of the city is estimated to be 1,620,000 in 2008, which makes it the fourth most populous urban agglomeration in the state of Maharashtra. It lies on the western edge of Deccan Plateau amidst the picturesque surroundings of Western Ghats. On the southwestern part of the city lies Trimbakeshwar, from which originates the river Godavari that flows through its various parts. The river along with several small tributaries like The Waghadi and Nasardi forms the northern boundary of the city. The terrain consists of black soil, which is suitable for growing crops like Bajra and paddy. Popularly known as the "Wine Capital of India", Nashik has a lot of places of interest for tourists coming over here. Among them include Shree Kalaram Mandir, Nandur Madhmaheshwar, Dhammagiri Igatpuri, Sita Gumpha, Artillery Center, Trimbakeshwar Temple, Shree Ved Temple, Godavari Ghat and Pandav Caves.
