The term 'Nasik' (or 'Nashik') is supposed to be derived from a mythological tale in which Laxman, the brother of Lord Rama, cut off the nose of Shurpnakha, during the period of their exile. The Sanskrit word for a nose is 'Nasika', which made the place, where they spent their 14 years of exile, to be known as Nasik. The Sita Gumpha caves, where they used to live and from where the wife of Lord Rama was abducted by the demon king, Ravana, can still be seen here.
The earliest recorded history of Nasik dates back to 150 BC, when it was known as one of the most important trade centers of the country. During the time of the Mughals, the city came to be known as Gulshanabad. It was, however, the Peshwas who gave the city its present name of Nashik, when they took control of if in 1818. The rule of the Peshwa was short lived and soon the city fell into the hands of the British and Nasik remained under the influence of the colonial rule until the independence of India in 1947.

It was made a district in the year 1869. Nasik is known for the exceptional bravery shown by a teenage, named Anand Kanhere during the freedom struggle movement of India. The incident wherein he shot the Collector of the city led to his glorious martyrdom along with his companion Vinayak Ramchandra Deshpande and Krishnaji Karve. Later years also saw the movement launched by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar for the abolition of untouchability and elevation of the status of Dalits in the social fabric of contemporary India.
After independence, The government initiated several plans to give a boost to the industrial development of Nasik. As a result, the city emerged at a prominent place on the industrial map of India. The establishment of several manufacturing and engineering industries set the momentum of its industrial growth, which still remain the major contributors of its economy. The recent years saw the emergence of Nasik as a well-balanced modern city with infrastructural facilities for agriculture and IT based industries as well. Its growing economy and splendid growth pattern have attracted builders from across the country and they have started to invest heavily in Nasik Properties. As a tier-2 metro city, Nasik offers a lot of potential for all sorts of real estate investors and property seekers in the years to come.
