Nagpur, a city in the Indian state of Maharashtra, is famous for oranges. It is the second capital and the third most populous city of Maharashtra. Spread in an area of 218 sq. km, the region of Nagpur has an estimated population of 2,420,000 residents, making it the thirteenth largest urban area in India. Located on the Deccan plateau, most of Nagpur has a rocky terrain, which is covered with alluvial deposits brought by the Kanhan River. Some area has granular sandy soil, while others are characterized by the existence of crystalline metamorphic rocks like granites and gneiss. The city of Nagpur has a number of natural and man-made lakes. Ambazari lake, Gorewada lake, Futala lake and Telangkhedi lake are some of the natural lakes whereas the man-made lakes include the names of Sonegaon lake and Gandhisagar lake. Falling in a tropical wet and dry climate zone, the region is dry for the most part of the year with an annual rainfall of 1,205 mm mostly during the monsoon season from June to September. Geographically, it is at the center of India and the Zero mile marker is located here. Founded by Gond people, the area around the district of Nagpur has always been regarded as a chief commercial and political center of the Vidarbha region. Having served as the capital of Central Provinces and Berar during the colonial rule, the city was made the second capital of the state of Maharashtra after independence during the first state reorganization.
