Mysore, the second largest city of Karnataka after Bangalore, is a well known historical destination in India. The city of Mysore, which is the headquarter of the Mysore district and division, is situated at an approximate distance of 146 km from the capital city of the state. Mysore derives its name from 'Mahisuru', which means the abode of a demon according to the Hindu mythology. The region of Mysore spans an area of 128.42 sq. km with an estimated population of 799,228 residents. Situated at the base of the Chamundi Hills in the southern region of the state, the district of Mysore has an average altitude of 770 meters. Summers are hot with the maximum temperature rising as high as 38.5 degree centigrade, while the climate remains cool in winter with average temperature hovering around 10 degree centigrade. Monsoon brings much of precipitation with an average annual rainfall of 798.2 mm. Much of drinking water requirement is fulfilled by its two main river namely Kaveri and kabini, which flow through the two extreme sides of the city. Lakes are the other water bodies in the district that abound in number. Kukkarahalli, Lingambudhi and Karanji are some of the prominent lakes in the city. Mysore is an important tourism center in India. Most tourists like to visit during the Dassara festival, which is celebrated with much fanfare. Some of the most visited places in the city include the names of the Ambavilas Palace (also known as Mysore Palace), Brindavan Garden, Railway Museum, the Jayalakshmi Vilas, the Jaganmohana Palace and the Lalitha Mahal.
