Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, is the most populous city in India. It has an estimated population of about 14 million residents, who live in an area of 603.4 square kilometers. If the populations of Navi Mumbai and Thane, two of its neighboring suburbs, are also taken into account, Mumbai will become the fourth largest urban agglomeration in the world with a combined population of around 19 million people. Mumbai lies on the western coast of India, in a coastal region named as the Konkan. It has a deep natural harbor in the Arabian Sea, which has made it the largest port of the country. The port handles about half the cargo that comes to India through sea routes. Towards the north, the city has hilly areas with the highest point rising upto 450 meter in height. The city has as many as six lakes, namely Vihar, Upper Vaitarna, Vaitarna, Tansa, Tulsi and Powai. Vihar Lake and Tulsi Lake are located in Borivali National Park, from which originates three small rivers, namely the Dahisar, Ohiwara and Poinsar. The well-developed Hindi film and television industry has added glamor to the city, which has prompted numerous youths from other parts of the country to come here. Several important financial institutions including the Bombay Stock Exchange, the Reserve Bank of India and the National Stock Exchange of India are located here making it an economical hub of the country.
