Mangalore Map |
Mangalore is the fourth largest city and a major port of the Indian state of Karnataka. The city, developed as a port on the Arabian Sea during the middle period was named after the local Hindu deity known as Mangaladevi. Nestled in the Western Ghat mountain ranges, the city serves as the administrative headquarters of the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka in modern India. Mangalore lies strategically along the Malabar Coast, which has made it a chief stopover for most of the sea traffic on western part of India. More than 75 percent of India's coffee exports and a big mass of country's cashew exports come through the port of Mangalore. In the past, the city has been ruled by several major dynasties, such as Kadambas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Vijayanagar dynasty, Hoysalas and the Portuguese. Its commercial and strategic importance has prompted British rulers to wage several wars against the Mysore rulers, and finally in 1799, it fell into the hands of the British. After independence, the city remained part of the erstwhile Madras Presidency before joining the present state of Karnataka in 1956. The city is characterized by diverse demographic features and varied landscape. The people here speak and understand different languages, which includes Tulu, Konkani and Beary, besides Kannada, the state's official language. Its landscaping feature includes sloping mountains, freshwater streams, coconut palms and hard red-clay tiled-roof buildings.
