There are mythological tales in the great epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata that are associated with the area of present Mangalore. We also find its references in the historical accounts of many travelers from Rome and Greece, who mentioned it by different names. The early part of Mangalore history is dominated by rulers, like the Chalukyas, Hoysalas and Rashtrakutas. The Kadamba dynasty was supposed to be ruling over the region from 200-600 AD, whereas it served as the capital of Alupa dynasty till the fourteenth century. By this time the city became an important trade center, and was visited frequently by Persian merchants and travelers.
By the close of the fifteenth century, Europeans started to visit Mangalore and soon the city was found under the influence of foreign settlers, chiefly the Portuguese. By the middle of the sixteenth century, the Portuguese had established their full control over Mangalore, which saw an influx of Roman Catholics and Goud Saraswat Brahmins following the wars between the Portuguese and the Marathas. Before passing into the hands of Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore, Mangalore was ruled by the Keladi Nayaka kingdom who usurped the control of the city by defeating the Portuguese.

During the eighteenth century, Mangalore was found to be shifting between the control of the British East India Company and the Mysore rulers of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. Finally it went into the hands of the British after the death of Tipu Sultan in the fourth Anglo-Mysore war. The British made it the headquarters of the Canara district and initiated the process of urban and infrastructural developments. Soon it emerged as a center of education and trade. When the Canara district was bifurcated into two separate districts, it was made the headquarters of the South Canara.
Many missionary institutions were opened during the nineteenth century, which played significant roles in education, health and social welfare of the people living in the city. The British government put the city on the railway map of India by connecting it to the Southern Railway. The Municipal council was commissioned in 1866 to give a pace to the process of urban development. In independent India, Mangalore was transferred from the Madras Presidency to the Mysore State (later Karnataka) as a result of the States Reorganization Act of 1956. Today, the city is known nationwide as a leading center of commerce, business and IT technology.
