Maharashtra, located on the western Indian coast, is the country's second largest state population wise and the third largest areas wise. Its coastline overlooks the Arabian Sea towards the west, while its land area is bounded by states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Goa and the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli. The Western Ghats, locally known as Sahyadri, runs parallel to the coast and is home to many South Indian rivers, chief among them being Godavari and Krishna rivers. Most of these rivers form fertile basins along the course of their movements before falling into the Bay of Bengal. Spread in a geographical area of 307,731 sq. km, the population of the state of Maharashtra is estimated to be around 100 million. The capital is Mumbai and Marathi is the prevalent language spoken in the state. The present state of Maharashtra came into existent in 1960 when the first state reorganization committee carved out all Marathi speaking areas from the erstwhile Bombay state, Deccan states and Vidarbha to create a new state in response to the demand posed by the Marathi community. One of the richest states in India, Maharashtra constitutes as much as 15 percent of the total industrial output of the country. According to the financial report of 2005-06, Maharashtra contributed 13.2 percent in the nation's GDP growth. Besides Mumbai, the state of Maharashtra is home to some of the well known cities of India, such as Pune, Nasik, Nagpur, Satara, Ahmednagar and Kolhapur.
