Madurai, the third largest city in the Indian State of Tamilnadu, is popularly known as the Temple City in India and worldwide. Madurai has a long history of over 2500 years, which makes it the oldest inhabited city in the Indian peninsula. As an important commercial center and the capital of the ancient Southern civilization, it had trade relations with ancient Rome and Greece. Modern Madurai is spread over an area of 109 sq. km with an estimated population of over one million people. Madurai is also known by names like Thoongaa Nagar, Malligai Maanagar, Koodal Maanagar and the Athens of the East. Predominately a dry and hot area, it has a moderate climate during winter season. Rainfall occurs during the month of October to December and the annual rainfall averages 85 cm. Situated on the bank of river Vaigai, Madurai has a number of temples and other places of tourist attraction spread over the district. Some of these include Meenakshi-Sundareswar Temple, Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal, Kazimar Mosque, Gandhi Museum, Goripalayam Dargah and Kudal Azhagar Koil. Madurai Municipal Corporation is the chief administrative body that looks after education, transport and health requirements of the city. The corporation was constituted in 1971 and since then it has received several national award for implementing development works in Madurai.
