Madhya Pradesh, an Indian state located in its central part, is often termed as the "Heart of India, chiefly because of its geographical location. It remained the largest state of the country by area until the formation of Chhattisgarh, which was created after carving out a major chunk of land from Madhya Pradesh. At present, the state, with an area of 308,252 square kilometer, is bound by Uttar Pradesh on the northeast, Gujarat on the west, Chhattisgarh on the east, Rajasthan on the northwest and Maharashtra on the south. The whole of Madhya Pradesh consists of several regions distinguishable by the landscaping feature of the terrain and also by the language and culture of the people living there. These regions are known as Malwa, Bundelkhand, Baghelkhand, Nemar, Chambal, Mahakoshal and the region comprising Central part of the Vindhya and Satpura ranges. The Vindhya and Satpura ranges and also the river Narmada have traditionally been considered as the dividing line between the north and south India. Some of the great river basins of the country are found in Madhya Pradesh, as the region is quite rich in the number of rivers flowing through the state. There are Narmada rivers, Tapti rivers, Godavari rivers, Mahanadi rivers and a number of other rivers and tributaries that keep the land of the state drained throughout the year. Administratively, the state is divided into 50 districts and the city of Bhopal serves as its capital. Some of the important cities in the state are Indore, Jabalpur, Gwalior and Ujjain. The state is also on the tourist map of India, as several sites of tourist attractions are found here.
