Ludhiana Map |
Ludhiana, the largest city in Punjab, is known nationwide for the manufacturing of hosiery yarns and other products. Spread in an area of 310 sq. km, the population of the city is estimated to be 1.4 million. Ludhiana is situated on the old bank of river Sutlej, which is 13 kilometer south of its current course. The northern and western part of the city provide evidence of the earlier course of river Sutlej, as the land here has sharp inclinations. The residential area found in this region is mostly unplanned and reveals the negligence of district administration. The terrain found in most of Ludhiana consists of yellow sandstone and granite, which causes the formation of several topographical features, such as hillocks, dips and plateaus. The land in Ludhiana is very fertile, and is regarded as one of the most expensive in the entire country. Fertile land, flourishing industries and big investment from numerous NRIs in real estate sectors have contributed much to the growth of the city in financial domain. Known as the Manchester of India, Ludhiana is regarded as the industrial hub of Punjab. It is home to some of the prominent knitwear factories and hosiery yarn mills of the country.
