Kota is a city and an important commercial center in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is located in the southern part of the state, covering a geographical area of about 12,436 square kilometers. Situated in the eastern basin of the river Chambal, the district area is surrounded by Tonk, Sawai Madhopur and Bundi districts on the north and northwest. The fertile land found within the district region is favorable for the growth of cotton, wheat, millet, oilseeds and coriander, while the major commercial activities include textile weaving, cotton & oilseed milling, dairying, distilling and the manufacture of metal handicrafts. There are many prominent engineering and chemical companies in the country that have their bases here. Kota is known for its unique style of painting, saris and stone products all over the country. Over the years, numerous medical & engineering colleges and coaching centers have mushroomed at each and every corner of the city, placing it prominently on the education map of the country. Today, Kota has emerged as the most favored destination for the students wishing to get into IITs and other elite engineering and medical colleges of the nation, after passing their higher secondary examinations. Some of the major places in the city includes Chambal Garden, Jag Mandir, Maharao Madho Singh Museum, Godavari Dham Temple, Barrage over the Chambal river, Darrah National Park, etc.
