Kerala Map |
Kerala, the first Indian state to attain 100 percent literacy rate, is located in the southernmost part of the Indian peninsula. It has a long coastline (about 580 km long) facing the Arabian Sea to the west, while its width varies between 35 and 120 km. Only two states share their borders with Kerala - Karnataka to the north and Tamilnadu to the south and east. The eastern part of the state falls in the mountainous terrain of the Western Ghats, while the western part consists of coastal lowlands. Between these two extremes lie the midland plains, characterized by rolling hills and valleys. Eastern Kerala is a highland comprising high mountains, deep-cut valleys and gorges. Its average height is about 1500 meter above sea level. Most of the west-flowing rivers of the state originate in this region. Some of the important rivers in the state are Periyar, Pamba, Chaliyar, Bharathapuzha, Achankovil and Kadalundipuzha. The coastal region consists of flat terrains and several interconnected canals, estuaries, lakes and rivers, which are known as the Kerala Backwaters. Here lies the largest water body of Kerala, known by the name of Lake Vembanad, which is more than 200 square kilometer in area. The state of Kerala consists of fourteen districts, distributed among the three historical regions, namely Malabar, Kochi and Travancore. Thiruvananthapuram or Trivandrum is the capital and Kochi (Cochin), Thrissur, Kozhikode (Calicut) and Kollam are major cities of Kerala. Beautiful beaches, classical temples and unique culture and traditions have placed Kerala on the tourism map of India and the number of tourists coming to the state is found to be increasing every new year. Some of most popular tourist destinations include Kovalam beaches, hill stations of Munnar and Wayanad, Periyar National Park, backwaters region of Alleppey and Kollam, and heritage sites of Mattancherry Palace and Padmanabhapuram Palace.
