Karnataka, located in the southern part of India, is the eighth largest state of the country by area. Its total land area is 191,976 square kilometer, which constitutes 5.83 percent of India's total geographical area. As many as 29 districts comprise the whole of Karnataka, which is a home to more than fifty million people of the country. Geographically, the state is divided into three principal zones, namely Bayaluseeme, Malenadu and Karavali. Most of the state falls in Bayaluseeme region, which consists mostly of the plains of the Deccan plateau. Malenadu is a hilly region lying mostly within the Western Ghats, while the Karavali region is the area running parallel to the coastline of Karnataka. Mullayanagiri, located in Chikkamagaluru district, is the tallest mountain in the state, with an altitude of 1929 meters. Several rivers flow through the state bestowing the state with fertile basins along the course of their movement. Some of the prominent rivers are the Kaveri, the Krishna, the Tungabhadra and the Sharavathi. Originally named as the State of Mysore, Karnataka came into existence in 1956 when the States Reorganization Act was passed by the central government of India. Before independence, the area within the present boundaries of Karnataka was called "Carnatic" by the British. The state got its present name of Karnataka in the year 1973. Bangalore, the center of IT revolution in India, is the capital of Karnataka. Kannada is the official language as well as the native language of the people living in Karnataka. Some of the major tourist attractions in the state include Bandipur National Park, Gol Gumbaz, Gomateshwara, Jog Falls, Udupi Krishna Temple, cave temples at Badami and Bannerghatta National Park.
