Jhansi is a city in Uttar Pradesh, known historically for the part it played during the first battle of independence under the leadership of Rani Laxmi Bai, the heroine of the whole episode. Presently, Jhansi is surrounded by districts like, Jalaun to the north, Mahoba and Hamirpur to the east, Lalitpur to the southwest, Datia and Bhind to the east, and Tikamgarh to the south. A major portion of the district lies on the Bundelkhand ridge at the foothills of the Vindhya Range, while the remaining smaller portion of the district forms a part of the vast Tarai plains of Uttar Pradesh. Chief crops include wheat, peas, oilseeds and pulses, though the condition here is highly favorable for the cultivation of citrus species fruits. Monsoon seasons bring much of the rainfall, which is the main source for irrigation in spite of the availability of man-made irrigation facilities at some places. There is a great variation in summer and winter climate owing to its location on a rocky plateau. The land of Jhansi is associated with many eminent personalities of the country, which include the names of Rani Lakshmi Bai, Dhyan Chand, Maithili Sharan Gupt, Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi, Chandra Shekhar Azad and Indeever. Major places of interest include Jhansi Fort, Rani Mahal, Maha Lakshmi Temple, UP Govt. Museum, Panchkuian Temple, Ganesh Mandir, etc.
