Guwahati, situated in the Indian state of Assam, is the most important city within the entire North-East Region (NER) serving as the hub of all political, commercial and cultural activities. It is the largest city not in Assam only but in the entire region with an ever expanding boundary line and swelling population. The present city of Guwahati covers an area of 216 square kilometer and the population is estimated to be over a million residents. It is bounded on the west by the LGB International Airport and Narengi on the east. Situated on the southern bank of Brahmaputra river, the district of Guwahati faces the foothills of the Shillong plateau to one of its sides. Ranked among the fastest growing cities of India, Guwahati is expanding beyond the southern bank of Brahmaputra river to its northern bank. Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is working on an area of 340 sq. km to develop the city further. As the prime center of education in the north east region, the city hosts a number of premier educational institutions, which also includes the Guwahati chapter of the Indian Institute of Technology. Guwahati is the transportation hub with all major trains leading to the north east region having a halting point at the city. Commonly known as the gateway of the North-East Region, all roads leading to any area of the region pass through the middle of Guwahati.
