Gujarat is a state in India that is situated at its westernmost extreme. The area of Gujarat is bounded by Pakistan on the northwest, the Arabian Sea on the west, Maharashtra and the Union Territories of Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli on the south and southeast, Rajasthan on the north and northeast and Madhya Pradesh on the east. Its coastline facing the Arabian Sea features some of the well known beaches of the country, such as Diu beach, Chorwad beach, Ahmedpur Mandvi beach, Gopnath beach and Umbergam beach. Historically known by names like Saurashtra and the Kathiawad peninsula, Gujarat has always been an important trading center of the country and some of the well-known industries have their base in the state even today. Almost one fifth of the total industrial output of the country comes from the state of Gujarat, which houses some of the largest businesses of India. Petrochemical, Pharmaceutical and Textile are the major industries in the state. Ahmedabad and Surat are the major centers of commercial activities, while Gandhinagar serves as the political capital of the Gujarat. Other important districts in the state include Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Patan, Vadodara and Bharuch. Gujarat has some of the most revered temples in India, chief among them are Somnath Temple, Swaminarayan Temple, Modhera Sun Temple and Dwarkanath Temple. The official and the most widely spoken language in the state is Gujarati.
