Delhi, the capital of India, is the second largest city of the country in terms of population with over 17.3 million residents. Worldwide, it is the sixth largest city by population. It has a total land area of 1.484 square kilometers. Situated on the bank of the river Yamuna, Delhi has an expansive area spanning from Sarup Nagar in the north to Rajorki in the south. At its western border lies Najafgarh, while towards the east it has the river Yamuna. The National Capital Territory of Delhi is bounded by cities of the adjoining states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Together with cities like Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad, the territory is referred to as the National Capital Region of Delhi. Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Committee and Delhi Cantonment Board are the local bodies that share power to control administratively most of Delhi Metro areas. Delhi has been a cultural, political and commercial center of India since the sixth century BC. The city is dotted with several monuments and architectural marvels, which attract tourists from other parts of the country as well as from abroad. New Delhi serves as the seat of central government and houses important offices, such as the Parliament of India and the President House.
