The early history of Coimbatore is hard to find as there are very less resources available to know about it. Some sources indicate that it formed an integral part of the Ganga kingdoms before it came under the influence of the second Chola empire during the ninth century. There are also evidences of tribal dominance in early part of its history. Among several tribes, the most dominant one was found to be Kosars who ruled from a place known as Kosampathur. It is where the modern city of Coimbatore exists today.
The emergence of a new empire by the name of Vijayanagara Empire during the close of fourteenth century ended the dominion of Delhi Sultanate over the area, which was later to become Coimbatore. As an integral part of Madurai, it saw some new settlement coming from the nearby areas of the present Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka during this period. By the time of the fierce war between Madurai and Mysore, when the Vijayanagara Empire started to lose its shine, the region of Coimbatore was merely a small village consisting of around 3000 inhabitants only.

When Mysore under Tipu Sultan was defeated finally after the fourth Anglo-Mysore war and its throne was restored to its earlier ruler, the Wodeyars, Coimbatore fell into the hands of the colonial power who made it a part of the Madras Presidency. During the early years of the nineteenth century the district of Coimbatore was formed and the city of Coimbatore was established to serve as the capital of this newly formed district. When the municipality came into existence in 1848, the road for the development on modern lines was laid and the city started to grow at a rapid pace.
Coimbatore rose against the British power when the Second Poligar War occurred in 1801. The Poligars of Salem and Dindigul region lent adequate support to the cause and the rebels of Malabar and Mysore also came to help them in their attempt to overpower the British army stationed in the city. After independence, Coimbatore became an important industrial hub of Tamilnadu, with industries of all sorts started to dot the landscape of the city. Today, the highest revenue collected in the state comes from the district of Coimbatore.
