Cochin Map |
Cochin, now known as Kochi, is the second largest city in Kerala after its capital, Thiruvananthapuram. Administratively, the city falls in the district of Ernakulam and covers an area of about 95 sq. km. It forms the largest urban agglomeration in the state with an estimated metropolitan population of about one and a half million. A major seaport in India, Kochi traces its history to the Kulasekhara empire, which formed the Kingdom of Cochin during twelfth century. As a major port lying on the important sea routes of the Arabian Sea, Cochin has been at the receiving end of several seafarers, travelers and tradesmen during the course of its history. It became the first site of European settlement in India when the Portuguese occupied it in 1503. Subsequently, the Dutch, the Mysore and the British established their dominions over here. When India became independent in 1947, Kochi was the first princely state to join the Indian Union without any coercion. Today, the city of Kochi is accelerating in the domain of information technology, international trade and tourism, and has become the commercial center of Kerala. Expanding boundary lines and rapid urbanization have brought the city into the category of the fastest growing second-tier metros in India. However, the city of Cochin is challenged by the usual problems associated with a metro city of such a large size, such as pollution and traffic congestion.
