The diversity of India is well reflected in the varied demographic composition of its cities. More than a quarter of Indian people live in urban areas, ranging from the highly concentrated metro cities to the thinly-populated remote locations. Most of these cities are inhabited with people showing much variety in language, culture, ethnicity and religion, thus presenting a microcosm of the country itself. There are cultural legacy, historical background and the uneven level of economic growth that might separate one city from the other in appearance, but in essence they are all the same, and reflect the true spirit of what we call Indianness.
There is a large number of cities in India that have more than one million people residing within the extreme boundaries of their metropolitan areas. A few among them have already seen their population rising beyond ten million. Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai have traditionally been regarded as the metropolitan cities of India.
