Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, is the fourth largest metropolitan city in India. It has a population of 4.2 million residents spread in an area of 181.06 square kilometers. The combined population of the city and its suburbs is estimated to be over eight million, which brings it among the largest urban agglomerations in India. The city came into existence in the seventeenth century when the British needed a major urban center in the south to serve as the capital of Madras Presidency. Located on the southeastern coast of India, the city lies on the Coromondel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. The Adyar river flows to the south while the Cooum river meanders through the center and the Kortalaiyar through the northern border of the city. The city has a favorable base for the development of several industries including automobile, hardware manufacturing, technology and healthcare. It is the second largest exporter of software products and IT related services in India, next after Bangalore. Chennai is a favorite destination for the major automakers in the country and a large portion of India's automobile manufacturing industry is based here. The contribution of the city towards the development of automobile industry in India has earned it the nickname "the Detroit of India". A major portion of the State's GDP comes through the district of Chennai, which is the center of all financial activities in the State. Chennai is also known for the Tamil film Industry, which is the second largest film industry in India after Mumbai.
