Bikaner is the fourth largest city of Rajasthan, an Indian state known for magnificent royal forts and unique cultural traditions. The district of Bikaner is located on the north-western part of India touching the eastern border of Pakistan to its northwest. Its neighboring districts in Rajasthan include Ganganagar to the north, Churu to the east, Jodhpur to the south, Hanumangarh to the northeast, Nagaur to the southeast and Jaisalmer to the southwest. The whole district lies in the inhospitable terrain of the Thar Desert, which is not favorable to intensive agriculture. However, the availability of irrigation facilities in the form of certain canals, such as the Rajasthan Canal, the Ganga Canal and the recently-built Indira Gandhi Canal have made it possible for the local farmers to grow crops like wheat, cotton and mustard. Mining and wool production are major industries in Bikaner, which is also famous for its "Bikaneri Bhujia" and special kinds of sweets. The city of Bikaner has a fairly long history of royal traditions, which dates back to 1486 when the city was founded by Rao Bika. Its cultural heritage can be seen in the several palaces and forts that exist even today with all their traditional grandeur. Junagarh Fort, Laxmi Niwas Palace and Lalgarh Palace are unique in their exhibition of medieval-period architecture. There are several temples and other places of tourist attractions as well, prominent among them include Moolnayakji, Laxmi Nath Temple, Kolayat, Karni Mata Temple, Shiv Bari Temple, Camel Farm, Sur Sagar, Gajer Wildlife Sanctuary, Devi Kund Sagar, Rajasthan State Archives, Public Park and Zoo.
