Aurangabad, located in Maharashtra, is a famous tourist place best known for the Ajanta and Ellora Caves, the world heritage sites recognized by UNESCO. The city, named after the last Mughal Emperor Aurangabad, is commonly referred to as "The City of Gates" owing the presence of a large number of these throughout the region. A popular tourist destination lying at the path of the Ajanta and Ellora Caves, Aurangabad is characterized by the presence of several historical monuments and contemporary buildings, such as Bibi Ka Maqbara and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. The district of Aurangabad comes under the Marathwada region, which became a part of the state of Maharashtra only in 1960 as Aurangabad Division. Since then the industrialization process of the area began, and the city of Aurangabad started to feature on the industry map of India. Today, the city has a well-developed cotton and silk textile industry, which is famous for the production of a unique kind of fabrics known locally as Himroo textile. The city has also been known nationwide for the production of silk saris and several manufacturers, such as the Aurangabad Silk Mills and Standard Silk Mills are keeping the tradition alive even today. Other industries in the city include automotives, pharmaceuticals, consumer durables, breweries, plastic processing, aluminum processing, biotech and agriculture.
