Assam, located south of eastern Himalayas, is the most important northeastern state of India, as it serves as the gateway to other states in the region. The state of Assam is the largest among all the states in the north eastern part of the country, popularly known as the Seven Sisters. These states include Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram besides Assam. The state of Assam also shares borders with neighboring countries, like Bangladesh and Bhutan. A major portion of the state is under protected forest areas, which provide natural habitats to a rich variety of wildlife including some of the rare species close to extinction. Assam is gaining position on the tourist map of India, and there is much scope to develop wild-life tourism here. Kaziranga and Manas are well known sanctuaries, which have also been included among Wold Heritage Sites. Assam lies south of the eastern Himalayas in the valleys formed by the Brahmaputra and the Barak river. Alongside, several mountains and hills dot the landscape of the state, chief among them are the Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills. The total area of Assam is 78,438 square kilometer. River Brahmaputra is the major geographical feature, which dominates the landscape, culture and economy of the state. An exceptionally high rainfall, though suitable for crops like rice and tea, often results in floods, inundations and deluges. Assam is an economically important state of India, as it is a major supplier of petroleum & its products, silk and tea in the country. The capital is Dispur, which is a city located in the outskirts of Guwahati, the largest city of the state.
