Andhra Pradesh, the fourth largest state in India, is situated on the eastern Indian coast. Its coastline is one of the longest in the country, with a total length of 972 kilometer. Population wise, Andhra Pradesh is the fifth largest state of India, with a population of over 76 million residents. The Bay of Bengal lies to the east of the state, while on other sides, it is bordered by states, like Maharashtra, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The fertile plains of river Krishna and Godavari that run through the middle of the state, are suitable for the cultivation of rice and several other crops. Once known as the "Rice Bowl of India", the state of Andhra Pradesh is next to West Bengal in the production of rice in India. Other crops in the state include sugarcane, cotton, pepper, mango and tobacco. Agricultural has been the mainstay of the state's economy since the earliest known civilization, however, it is making rapid progress in the domain of technology-driven industries of late. The present state of Andhra Pradesh came into existence in 1956 after merging the three distinct regions known by the names of Andhra, Telengana and Rayalaseema. There are 23 districts in Andhra Pradesh and the capital is Hyderabad, which along with its twin city Secunderabad is the largest city in the state. Visakhapatnam is the second largest city and the major seaport, known also as the base of Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy. Vijayawada is the third largest city and a chief trading center in the state. Some of the major sites of tourist attraction include Tirupati temple, Visakhapatnam beaches, remains of Vijayanagar Empire, Borra Caves, Araku Valley, Belum Caves, Charminar, Golconda Fort and Talakona.
