Allahabad is one of the major cities of Uttar Pradesh, the largest state in India. Commonly known as Prayag in antiquity, the region of Allahabad lies at a confluence of Ganges, Yamuna and the mythical Sarasvati. The point where the three holy rivers meet is popularly known as Triveni Sangam, which holds a prominent place in Hindu mythology. Allahabad is one of the four sites in India, where the Kumbh Mela is organized after every twelve years. The other three sites are Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. Allahabad is bounded by the Bundelkhand region on its southwest, the Awadh region on its northeast, the Baghelkhand region on its southeast and the lower doab on its west. The doab region of Allahabad district is the most fertile area, suitable especially for the cultivation of wheat, while the southern and the eastern part of the district consist of dry and rocky terrain. Regarded as the third fastest growing city of the state, Allahabad is marked with the presence of several key government offices, educational institutions and industries. Allahabad University, which ranks prominently among the national universities of the country, is the hub of all educational activities supported adequately by numerous institutions spread all over the city. Moreover, the name of Allahabad is associated with as many as seven prime ministers of the country. Allahabad is also a division, which consists of four districts, namely Allahabad, Fatehpur, Kaushambi and Pratapgarh.
